Hemis Festival


Placed  in the foothills of the great Himalayas rests Hemis Gompa, the biggest Buddhist monastery in all of Ladakh. Camped within the dark areas of the massive mountainscape, this Seventeenth millennium organization fills up to the top for the two-day Hemis Festival Event honoring the lifestyle of recognized expert Padmasambhav, creator of Tantric Buddhism.


On the 10th day of the Tibetan lunar 30 days, priests known as "chhams" take middle level to execute habit dances which are organised only in monasteries where Tantric lessons and praise are used. Artists don papier-mâché, dreadful covers and gradually group around the courtyard's main flagpole, enacting the historical fight between excellent and wicked. Cymbals conflict, percussion lb, and horns drone until the fight indicates with the black demons' beat.
